Jon Rahm can replace Dustin Johnson as world No 1 with a win at Torrey Pines. Tim Barter explains how

Jon Rahm would be on top of the world rankings if he successfully defends his Farmers Insurance Open title on Sunday, but how can he jump ahead of current world No 1 Dustin Johnson?

Jon Rahm moved up to second in the world with his victory in the CareerBuilder Challenge last week, and another win at Torrey Pines would see him dethrone Johnson, who has been on top since February last year.

The 23-year-old Spaniard leapfrogged Jordan Spieth thanks to his La Quinta success which gave him a points average of 9.59, with top-ranked Johnson sitting on 10.93.

Rahm was the No 1 amateur in the world for a record 60 weeks before turning professional after the 2016 US Open, when he was ranked 766th before rising to 137th by the end of that year.

His three wins in 2017 lifted him to fourth in the world, and Rahm's results have continued on an upward curve this year with a runner-up finish in Kapalua (behind Johnson!) followed by his tense play-off win over Andrew Landry at La Quinta.

The ranking formula is weighted in favour of tournaments in the previous 13 weeks, with full value given to those events, before the points decline at a rate of 1.09 per cent, until they drop off at the end of the two-year period for qualifying results.

If Rahm triumphs at Torrey Pines it will give him three victories - he also won the DP World Tour Championship in November - and a runner-up finish - at the Tournament of Champions - in the last 13 weeks.

American Johnson was eight shots clear of Rahm when he won in Hawaii earlier this month, but otherwise he has only a tied-ninth and tied-14th finish over the last 13 weeks and he is now enjoying a couple of weeks off.

Another key factor in the ranking formula is a player's divisor, which is the number of events he has played over the last two years.

Again this benefits Rahm as he has the minimum divisor of 40 (the maximum is 52) as a result of playing in 39 events, while Johnson's is higher at 46.

So despite Johnson earning a total of 502.8 points to Rahm's 383.51 over the last two years - up to January 21 - the divisor means their average points total is much closer and Rahm could be top of the pile on Monday, with a projected 54 ranking points on offer to the winner at Torrey Pines.
