Harmon made three straight birdies on the back nine and two-putted from long distance at the last to cap a five-under 68 and close on 10 under par alongside Leishman, who just missed out on an eagle at 18 and settled for a 69.

The highlight of Harman's round was a delightful chip-in for his third straight birdie at the 15th, where his first pitch from wide of the green was short of pace and rolled back down the slope, although he responded with a perfect second attempt.

The two leaders will be wary of the presence of 2013 Kapalua champion Johnson after he recovered from a poor start to roll in seven birdie putts and card a 68.

Johnson slipped back to two under for the tournament when he bogeyed the third and fourth, but the world No 1 got back on track with three birdies in four holes before picking up four more on the back nine, including a sublime pitch to within a foot at the last from close to 100 feet.

Rickie Fowler lost ground on the leaders after two dropped shots on the outward nine, although he dug deep to make four birdies and salvage at 71 which lifted him to six under, while Jordan Spieth charged back into contention.

Spieth was apparently "under the weather" as he opened with a disappointing 75, but he found his range on day two and atoned for mistakes at the second and fifth with four birdies and a chip-in for eagle at the ninth.

The Open champion made three more birdies coming home to return a 66 which got him to five under alongside Jon Rahm, but Spieth's close friend Justin Thomas goes into the third round 10 shots off the lead.

Thomas, who won both Hawaii events last year, was well placed on four under with six holes remaining, but wild shots at 13 and 15 led to penalty drops and a pair of double-bogeys while he dropped another stroke at 17 before a birdie at the last saw him sign for a 75.
