Tiger Woods reflects on an encouraging opening-round 69 at the Hero World Challenge

Tiger Woods admitted he enjoyed being back playing competitive golf again after making an impressive start to his latest return from injury at the Hero World Challenge.

Woods, making his first appearance since February and only his fourth start since August 2015, posted a three-under 69 at the Albany to get within three strokes of leader Tommy Fleetwood.

The 14-time major champion, who underwent his fourth back operation in the space of three years in April, showed no signs of physical discomfort as he mixed five birdies with two bogeys in an encouraging display.

"For me I thought I did great," Woods said. "I hadn't played in a while after some of the difficulties I've been through. To come out here and score like I did, that was nice.

"It was fun to get out there and actually be part of a scorecard again. I didn't know what I could do. I've been playing a lot of holes at home but it's a little different when you've got to tee it up in a tournament.

"I had a lot of adrenaline going there. I was hitting the ball a little bit longer than I normally do and had to dial it back a little bit. Those are the internal struggles I haven't been through as a player for a while.

"It was not only nice to get that first round out of the way, but I'm only three shots out of the lead."

"I hit it really nice, drove it well and was solid on the greens," said Fleetwood, who gets married on Tuesday on the island. "I felt comfortable with my swing from the get-go and bogey-free is always good.

"It's a great place and tournament to end the year on and a great occasion to end the year on. We're just having a really good time."
