Masters 2017: Storms and tornado warning curtail first practice day

Augusta had to be evacuated because of a tornado warning, with further bad weather set to follow this week.

The first day of official practice ahead of the 81st Masters has been curtailed by severe thunderstorms and even a tornado warning.

Only players who teed off before 8am stood a chance of getting a full 18-hole practice round in as the adverse weather at Augusta National scuppered preparations for the first major of the year.

Play was initially suspended shortly before midday (5pm BST) when the first storm front moved in, bringing thunder and lightning as well as a torrential downpour which forced tournament officials to evacuate players and patrons from the course.

The practice range reopened some 90 minutes later and players and patrons were permitted to make their way back to the course at 1:45pm as the storms relented.

But the respite did not last long and all play was suspended for the day at 2:30pm with further thunderstorms approaching the area, and an official tornado warning was issued moments later.

All players and the thousands of patrons who had poured through the gates were ordered to seek shelter or leave the premises, and James Haddock's interview with Rich Beem live on Sky Sports News HQ had to be abruptly cut short when the "tornado watch" was announced.

"We are in the area of a tornado warning and we are shutting the course down," a spokesman said. "The course will be shut down for the entire day."

Official forecasts suggest Tuesday's practice will be under dry and sunny skies and in very warm temperatures, but thunderstorms are expected to cause further disruption on Wednesday which could threaten the traditional pre-tournament Par Three competition.

However, the outlook for the tournament is much brighter, although cooler and more blustery, with only a slim chance of rain affecting the early starters in the opening round.
