World No 2 Jason Day has pulled out of the World Golf Championship in Mexico City this week having picked up the flu and an infection in both ears.
The 29-year-old lost top spot in the world rankings to Dustin Johnson last week after the American won impressively at the Genesis Open at Riviera.
Day is a two-time winner of World Golf Championship events in 2014 and 2016, and has not missed an event since the Cadillac Championship at Doral three years ago, where he was out with a thumb injury.
"I'm truly disappointed to announce that I won't be able to play in next week's World Golf Championship-Mexico Championship," said Day in a statement released by the PGA Tour.
"I have a double ear infection and the flu, which precludes me from preparing for and playing in the tournament.
"I have heard great things about the Mexico Championship and the golf course. I want to thank the Salinas family for their support of the event [which is sponsored by Grupo Salinas]. I look forward to teeing it up there next year."
