The world No 102 upstaged a world-class field to claim a first European Tour title since 2013, carding a five-under 67 on Sunday to finish a shot clear of the chasing pack.

Beginning the day a shot behind overnight leader Tyrrell Hatton, Fleetwood posted an eagle-three at the 10th and picked up a shot at the next before birdieing two of his final three holes to seal victory.

"I didn't see this coming really," Fleetwood told Sky Sports. "I've only made the cut here once in six years, which just shows that makes no sense at all!

"I started the season well in Hong Kong and I didn't really want to stop. You never quite know how you're going to come out and play (after the Christmas break).

"I got two good rounds under my belt and then played really well over the weekend, but you never know what to expect in your first tournament of the year - and I didn't really expect this!"

Fleetwood finished one stroke ahead of 2014 champion Pablo Larrazabal and US Open winner Dustin Johnson, who eagled the last to close a four-under 68 on Sunday.

"It was a pretty good week," Johnson said. "Obviously I got off to a rough start the first day and I didn't play very well.

"I wasn't feeling that great the first day, but then obviously I came back and played well Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

"I'm happy with the golf game. It's going to keep getting better and I 'm happy with the way I played and the way I finished."
