Adam Hadwin will take a one-shot lead into the final round of the CareerBuilder Challenge after becoming the ninth player in PGA Tour history to break 60.
Just 10 days after Justin Thomas fired 59 in Hawaii, Hadwin matched the feat in California by posting 13 birdies in his bogey-free round at La Quinta Country Club.
He ran in six successive birdies from the second hole and five more in a row from the 11th.
At the par-four 18th, he missed the green with his approach but got up-and-down for a 59 by holing a three-footer.
The Canadian's milestone matched the feat of David Duval who also fired a 13-under round at La Quinta 18 years ago.
The 29-year-old, whose best-ever finish on the PGA Tour is a tie-for-fourth at the Canadian Open six years ago, said: "I got away with a few shots on the back nine.
"For whatever reason, I was making every putt I had. I haven't felt anything like it.
"Once the putt rolled in on 17 that helped. I knew all I had to do (for 59) was par the last."
"I thought about breaking 60 on 11 walking off and as I walked up 17 I said to my caddie Joe 'it looks like there's a lot more people than when we teed off today!'
"I was shaking, I really was. I knew what was at stake and the last thing I wanted to do was miss a three-footer for 59.
"Everybody talks about being in the zone and it being your day - it was my day.
"It's my first event of the year, so it's exciting to get the nerves back again and have a chance to win a golf tournament."
His nearest challenger is first-round leader Dominc Bozzelli who carded a 69 on the Nicklaus Course, to stand one shot adrift of Hadwin.
Hudson Swafford, who led after 36 holes, was still out in front with just three holes remaining of his third round.
But a double-bogey seven at 16, followed by a bogey at the penultimate hole, left him in a tie-for-third two strokes off the pace.
At the 16th, he pulled his second shot into a greenside bunker, needed three more shots to reach the putting surface, and then missed his first putt from eight feet.
However, despite shooting 71 over the Stadium Course, he remains in contention just two shots off the lead and in a tie for third, as he chases a maiden PGA Tour title.
Phil Mickelson, making his first start since October, slipped eight shots off the pace with a one-over -par 73 which left him tied-for-21st.
Scot Martin Laird leads the European challenge, six behind Hadwin after a 71, while Englishman Greg Owen is a shot further back after a 72.
