Rory McIlroy picks up two shots with one swing on day three of the BMW SA Open as he holes out from the fairway for an eagle-two

Rory McIlroy made a significant move up the BMW SA Open leaderboard with just one swing on the third day as he holed out from the fairway for eagle.

McIlroy showed no signs of discomfort from the back strain that hampered him in the second round, although he made a quiet start on Saturday with five pars and a birdie at the second.

But he soon had the vast galleries in raptures at the 486-yard seventh hole at Glendower, where he split the fairway with a perfect tee shot and left himself a good angle in for his short-iron second.

The world No 2 was wary of coming up short of the pin and spinning his ball back off the front and into trouble, but he made absolutely sure as his pure nine-iron pitched 10 feet beyond the target.

The spin took effect on the second bounce and his ball began its journey towards the cup, taking the right-to-left break and dropped in the centre for a magnificent eagle-two which got him to within a shot of the lead at the time.
