American Patrick Reed shoots the first eagle of The Open with his second shot on the par 4 3rd hole

Patrick Reed was keen to take advantage of some favourable conditions on the first morning of the 145th Open at Royal Troon.

The 25-year-old, best known on these shores for his passionate display for USA in the last Ryder Cup, was in fine form as he begun his quest to win the Claret Jug. He was one of many players to make an aggressive start.

The standout shot on his birdie-fest of a round came on the third hole, where he left himself a 100-yard second shot into the green.

His weapon of choice was his gap-wedge and he produced the perfect outcome, pinging the ball at the flag with enough check to send the ball slam dunking into the cup for the first two-shot gain of the tournament.
