Danny Willett gives his winning speech after winning the 2016 US Masters.

Former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson told Danny Willett he cost him £8,000 after placing a bet on Jordan Spieth to win the Masters.

Ferguson, who was attending the event, had a four-figure stake riding on Spieth to claim a second Green Jacket at Augusta on Sunday afternoon.

But Spieth's spectacular collapse on the back nine opened the door for Willett to storm through and claim his first major.

Willett, who is a Liverpool fan, was told by Ferguson: "I had £8,000 on Spieth.

Willett replied: "You need to know where to put your money!"
