Sergio Garcia had more on his mind than getting his ball back onto dry land as he went for an unscheduled dip during an adventurous start to the Honda Classic in Florida.
The Spaniard made an early impact on the leaderboard at PGA National when his 148-yard approach to the second found the bottom of the cup for an unlikely eagle-two.
He followed with a birdie at the next, but all his early good work was in danger of coming undone when he pulled his drive at the sixth too far left and his ball trickled into the water.
With only half his ball submersed, Garcia opted to removed his shoes and socks, rolled up his trousers and waded in, but only after an ultra-cautious check of the surrounding reeds and bushes, which are known homes to alligators and water snakes.
Garcia almost toppled over backwards as he took his stance, and he took further time to look behind him for approaching dangerous creatures before he managed to launch his ball back to the fairway amid a vast explosion of water.
The Ryder Cup star limited the damage to a bogey-five, but he bounced back with birdies at the seventh and eighth as he turned in 31 and earned the early outright lead on four under.
