Fowler had seven holes of his third round to complete on Sunday after lengthy fog delays on the previous two days and completed them in three under par thanks to birdies on the 13th, 16th and 18th.

"It was nice to move up and get myself in a good position to win this afternoon," said Fowler, who won his first European Tour title in the Scottish Open last year. "There's still a lot of work to do but the game feels good and I'm excited for the challenge ahead."

Fowler, who finished 66th in Abu Dhabi 12 months ago, added: "I definitely feel a lot more comfortable on the course than last year and I'm confident where the game is, but I'm going to have to earn this win because there are a lot of guys at the top of the leaderboard. It won't be easy."

Holland's Joost Luiten was Fowler's nearest challenger after recovering from a double bogey on the 12th and bogey on the 14th with two birdies and an eagle on the 18th to shoot a second consecutive 68.
