Smylie Kaufman wins the Shriners Hospitals for Childrens Open

Highlights from the fourth round of the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open.

Smylie Kaufman overturned a seven-shot overnight deficit to fire a ten-under 61 and snatch a dramatic one-shot victory at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open at TPC Summerlin.

The PGA Tour rookie, making just his fifth start on the Tour, played the last 11 holes in nine under and closed with a 20-foot birdie at the last to finish one clear of a six-way tie for second.

Four consecutive birdies around the turn had parachuted the 23-year-old up the leaderboard, before Kaufman followed a gain at the 13th by finding the green off the tee at the par-four 15th and sliding in the eagle putt.

Having picked up another stroke at the 16th, Kaufman, playing two hours ahead of the overnight leaders, completed his bogey-free card with a birdie-three to set a clubhouse target that couldn't be matched.

"I was just hitting it so good the last few days and just wanted to give myself a chance and post a number, and that's what it came down to," Kaufman said. "I dodged a lot of bullets coming down the stretch with guys coming in.

Kevin Na, looking to bounce back from last week's play-off loss to Emiliano Grillo, tied for the lead with a 25-foot birdie at the 16th only to slip back with a duffed chip at the short next.

A par at the last left Na one of the group on 15 under that also included overnight leader Brett Stegmaier, Patton Kizzire, Cameron Tringale, Jason Bohn and Alex Cejka.

Stegamier held a one-shot lead heading in to the final round and needed a birdie at the last to force a play-off, but hit his approach in to the fringe and left his birdie putt from off the green short.

"I was probably a foot in the fringe, so I probably just held up that extra foot," Stegmaier said. "I like to die my putts in the hole, and sometimes you run the risk of leaving it short."

A final round 62 from William McGirt left him in a tie for eighth with Chad Campbell two shots off the pace, with Russell Henley a further stroke off the pace.

Rickie Fowler, the highest ranked player in the field, finished his first appearance of the season with a two-under 68 to end in the tie for 25th.

"It's been a fun week," Fowler said. "It was nice being back. A lot of positives coming out of the golf side. Got some stuff to clean up, but definitely enjoyed it.
