Lee Slattery has been named the European Tour Golfer of the Month for September.

The 37-year-old Englishman edged out Sweden's Rikard Karlberg for the award after winning the Russian Open and finishing runner-up in the KLM Open in consecutive weeks.

Slattery lost his European Tour card in agonising fashion at the end of the 2014 season when he finished one spot outside the top 110, but he returned to his best form last month when he finished one shot clear of Tano Goya for an emotional victory at Skolkovo Golf Club, in Moscow.

It was his second European Tour title and his first since the 2011 Madrid Masters, a wait of three years and 332 days and he now sits 53rd on the Race to Dubai standings.

He then almost made it two victories in as many weeks when he pushed Belgian Thomas Pieters all the way in The Netherlands, missing a four-foot par putt on the 72nd hole which would have forced a play-off.

"I will treasure this award," said Slattery. "It means a lot to me. I remember the last time I won on the European Tour, young Tom Lewis had just turned professional and won so brilliantly in Portugal. He pipped me to that Golfer of the Month award, so it is nice to finally win one, and hopefully there are a few more in the future.

"My win in Russia meant a lot to my family. My wife's dad has not been very well, but I managed to juggle things around and practise hard and it paid off.

"Then to go to the KLM Open, my confidence was high and it still is. I was struggling a bit again this year and I needed a big cheque, so to have a win and to follow it up with a second was two dream weeks for me, especially as it could almost have been two wins.

"It just shows what hard work can do, and you just have to be patient off the course as well as on the course."

Meanwhile, Graeme McDowell won the European Tour Shot of the Month award for his spectacular par save during the second round of the Porsche European Open in Germany.

The Northern Irishman looked certain to drop a shot on the 13th when he drove into the shrubbery and took two attempts to hack back onto the fairway, but he then holed his fourth shot from 90 yards to salvage his par.

McDowell landed the award ahead of Slattery, Wade Ormsby, Jens Fahrbring and Miguel Angel Jimenez, and he said: "It's great to win Shot of the Month. The number of good shots we see on The European Tour these days is amazing so to have my shot chosen by My European Tour fans is pretty cool - especially when you're up against Miguel!"
