Jim Furyk has admitted defeat in his battle to recover from a wrist injury in time for next week's Presidents Cup.

The veteran has been forced to withdraw from the United States team to face the Internationals in South Korea, and he will be replaced by JB Holmes, captain Jay Haas has announced.

Furyk played only six holes of the BMW Championship last month and then pulled out of the Tour Championship in the hope that resting the problem would help him tee it up in Incheon next week.

But the injury has failed to heal sufficiently, although Furyk will still travel with the team to serve as an assistant captain  to Haas for the contest.

"There is nothing I take more pride in than representing the United States in The Presidents Cup and the Ryder Cup and I am deeply disappointed that I will have to withdraw from playing because my wrist, although improving, is still not where it needs to be at this point," Furyk said.

"There are few people I respect more than Jay Haas, who I partnered in The Presidents Cup in 2003 in South Africa, and I'm very grateful to accept the invitation to be part of the team as assistant captain."

Holmes will be making his Presidents Cup debut but was a part of the winning Ryder Cup team at Valhalla in 2008 in his home state of Kentucky.

"My heart goes out to Jim because I know how much The Presidents Cup means to him," Holmes said. "Obviously, he has been a leader for our team for many years and he will be greatly missed.

"I am, however, very honoured and excited to get the call from captain Haas to make the trip to South Korea to help the US team retain the cup."

Haas added: "Jim did everything he could to be ready and I'm sad that he won't be able to play. He's a totally selfless team player who will be missed.

"With that said, JB is excited for the opportunity and will be ready to play. He's had two top 10s to end the FedEx Cup play-offs so he's playing well and he'll be a good fit. We're all looking forward to a great week."
