Masters champion Patrick Reed won't care about his popularity with players and fans as long as he is winning tournaments, says Rob Lee.
It was pretty obvious through the week that Patrick isn't that popular. He is not bothered about trying to find friends, all he's interested in is becoming the best player he can possibly be and his sixth win is a Green Jacket.
He won't care. He just does the Patrick Reed thing. Even though they may not have been cheering that loudly for him on the first tee, when they get to the Ryder Cup, he'll be the first person they cheer for, no doubt about that.
The great thing about Patrick was the way he kept coming back. When Rory was making ground up and other people were making the charge, it didn't bother him, he just stayed where he was, doing his thing, playing his golf, and he made those crucial four, five, six-footers all the time, none probably more important than the one he made on 17 to save par.
There was a lot of pressure and he came through it.
It's win number six and he's 28 years of age, there's plenty of time for him to really build a big career. He can really hold his head high on that practice ground knowing he has the Green Jacket and he will look across at a lot of the players there and know that they haven't.
Rory's disappointment
I think that's five top 10s in a row now at Augusta National. At some point all the cards will tilt his way, at some point it's going to happen for Rory. Everybody felt that Patrick might fold and that if he did then Rory could step in, but that didn't happen.
He didn't hole a three or four footer for an eagle on the second, he dropped a shot at the third, the little par four, and it was always him trying to catch up, make a move, and he never really got there and Patrick looked unflappable. It just wasn't Rory's day.
A great tournament
I think the Masters will be viewed as the week when all the top players turned up and not just the top players, the top players who know how to play this golf course in great form. It wasn't a back-door win, it was a real validation of how good they are and Patrick Reed has been the best player on form, on this given week.
We also saw some amazing excitement on the Sunday with Rickie Fowler's 67 following his 65 on Saturday, Paul Casey with a chance to get to 62, Jordan Spieth with the chance to get to 62, there was so much in the offing, but beyond all that, it was Patrick Reed who just stayed that little step ahead of everybody else and in the end, he's the Masters champion.
This is just the first of four majors. There's so much coming our way on Sky Sports and it will be interesting because Patrick's matchplay form is amazing, but he doesn't really turn that into strokeplay form week in, week out, but maybe this is the point where he really pushes forward and starts to stack up the wins.
