Tiger Woods made the cut at the Genesis Invitational despite bogeying three of the final four holes of his second round on Friday.

The 15-time major champion sat at one-over-par at Riviera Country Club after following up his opening round 69 with a three-over-par 74.

Play was suspended due to darkness Friday night in Los Angeles, with 14 players still needing to complete their second rounds when they returned on Saturday.

Woods was made to wait to see if he would make it to the weekend, but with the cut line falling at one-over following the eventual completion of the second round he was confirmed as going through.

Woods, who has been grouped with Christiaan Bezuidenhout and Matthias Schwab for the third round, is making his first competitive event start since the Open Championship last July.

He has played sparingly since injuring his right leg and foot in a single-car accident in Los Angeles two days after the 2021 Genesis.

"I did not putt well today," Woods, who is also the tournament host, said after his difficulties on Friday.

"I blocked a lot of putts early, and this is probably the highest score I could have shot today. Probably should have shot probably five or six better than this, easily. Just didn't make the putts early and the middle part of the round when I had those opportunities."

He started Friday's round on the back nine and bogeyed the par-4 12th and 13th holes, including missing a 5-foot par putt on the 13th, before recovering with his best shot of the day at the 14th.

His tee shot bounced on the front of the green and rolled to within 10 inches of the cup to set up a tap-in birdie.

But his only other birdie of the day came at the par-5 17th, where he escaped a fairway bunker and stuck his third shot inside three feet.

Tiger Woods has apologised after he drew criticism for handing a tampon to Justin Thomas, an action he says 'was supposed to be fun and games'.

Woods went on to par the next six holes before bogeying three of his last four.

Friday's play was dominated by off-the-course issues, after Woods drew criticism for handing Justin Thomas a tampon on Thursday during their opening round.

Woods apologised for the incident after his second round.

McIlroy in contention as Homa leads

Max Homa shot a three under 68 to take the lead on Friday while Rory McIlroy fell back a bit with a 69, however he remains in the hunt on six under par.

After sharing the top spot with Keith Mitchell at the close of the opening round, Homa relied on a flurry of birdies at the turn in the second to claim a one-stroke advantage.

Jon Rahm made an eagle at the 17th during the Genesis Invitational thanks to this incredible bounce off the grandstands.

The American battled through a pair of early bogeys to pick up shots on the ninth, 10th, 11th and 13th en route to an overall score of 10 under.

Meanwhile, Mitchell remains hot on Homa's heels at nine under, alongside Jon Rahm and Lee Hodges.

Victory for McIlroy would see him overhaul Scottie Scheffler as world number one regardless of the latter's result, while outright third place would be good enough for him unless the American finishes in the top 25 or Rahm wins or is outright second.
