Branden Grace saw his BMW PGA Championship hopes disappear after encountering an unwanted obstacle during the final round at Wentworth.
The South African began Sunday one stroke adrift of overnight leader Andrew Dodt and shared the lead for large parts of a blemish-free front nine.
As Alex Noren closed a record-breaking round further along the course to grab the clubhouse lead, Grace was seeing his hopes unravel at the par-four 12th.
Grace sent his tee shot into a deep rocky pit close to the fairway, which was ankle-deep in murky water and had huge banks protecting either side of it.
Despite his caddie suggesting otherwise, Grace attempted to hack his ball back into play but proceeded to slice into a different section of the water.
He then took a penalty drop to get his ball back into play and missed the green with his fourth shot, before pitching to six feet and taking two putts on his way to a double-bogey seven.
That error dropped Grace four shots adrift of eventual winner Alex Noren, with two bogeys and one birdie over the closing stretch seeing him end in a share of ninth spot.
