Pep Guardiola has been criticised for his views on tackling but Jamie Carragher believes that the Manchester City coach knows how to win the ball back.

Following City's 4-2 defeat at Leicester earlier this month, it was put to Guardiola that his side had failed to win a tackle in the first 35 minutes of the match - by which point his side were already three goals down.

"I'm not a coach for the tackles, so I don't train the tackles," replied the City coach. "What I want is to try to play well and score goals. What's tackles? We're not going to win or lose for the tackles."

The comments opened Guardiola up to further criticism in the wake of a heavy defeat, fuelling the fire for those who argue that the Catalan cannot adapt to English football., but Carragher sees the situation differently.

We talk about tackling but what is tackling? The point of tackling is to win the ball back. You can do it in different ways.

Speaking on Monday Night Football, the Sky Sports pundit said: "We talk about tackling but what is tackling? The point of tackling is to win the ball back. You can do it in different ways.

"Are we forgetting that [it was] him as manager five years ago at Barcelona [when] we spoke about Barcelona off the ball as much on the ball.

"It's how quickly they win the ball back. So this is not a manager who neglects defensive duties, closing down and pressing."

Carragher believes it helped turn the team's one-goal deficit into a vital victory. "That is the main reason why and the difference in the second half," he added.

"It's not just about making a big tackle, it's about getting players around the ball. Who was doing that at Barcelona? Xavi and [Andres] Iniesta. They're not tacklers.

"You've got David Silva involved. It's not a challenge. They hunt the ball in packs and they win it through pressure. It happened all through the second half.

"Every time Arsenal got the ball they won it back off them quickly.

"It's all about that pressure, forcing people to make mistakes. That's how they won the game. It's not just about six studs going through the ball.

"They certainly won't lose a league by not being good enough at that. I don't think we should forget that Pep Guardiola is a manager who wants to win the ball back very quickly."
