Southampton v Tottenham preview: Mauricio Pochettino given triple injury boost

Tottenham are boosted by the return of Toby Alderweireld, Mousa Dembele and Vincent Janssen for Wednesday's Premier League clash at Southampton, live on Sky Sports 1 HD from 7.30pm.

Spurs, currently in fifth, are the last of the top-four contenders to play after Christmas, with Mauricio Pochettino returning to his former club as he looks to remain in touch of the Champions League places.

Southampton, unbeaten in their last four games in all competitions, haven't conceded a home goal in five hours and five minutes of Premier League football.

Southampton's 2-1 win over Spurs in May ended a run of seven Premier League games without beating them. Another victory would see Claude Puel's men move to within six points of their opponents.

Pochettino took charge of Southampton 54 times in the Premier League and won 35 per cent of his matches there (19).

Southampton's 17 Premier League games this season have seen just 33 goals scored; fewer than any other side.

Only Chelsea (43) have allowed their opponents fewer shots on target than Southampton (45) in the Premier League this season.

Tottenham (111) are one of only two sides to have attempted 100+ shots on target in the Premier League this season, alongside Liverpool.

Since joining Southampton in August 2014, Fraser Forster has kept a clean sheet in 40 per cent of his Premier League matches for the club (26/65) and conceded only 54 goals.

Harry Kane has scored with just two of his 17 shots in the Premier League since November 26 and one of those goals was a penalty.

Merson's predictions

Spurs have got a hard Christmas schedule. If they come through this period with some positive results, they will be well in the mix. Southampton are another team crying out for a bit of consistency. They were comfortable in the end against Bournemouth and it was good to see Jay Rodriguez back among the goals but I'm not sure about them. I fancy Spurs to win at St. Mary's, draws are simply no good to them.

Betting

Tottenham are 6/4 favourites to make it three Premier League wins in a row when they travel to Southampton on Wednesday evening, with the home side 15/8 to take the three points and the draw 9/4. Spurs are 9/4 to win 1-0, 2-0 or 2-1. Christian Eriksen has been in good form recently and can be backed at 15/2 to score the first goal, but it's Harry Kane who still heads the market at 9/2 from Southampton pair Jay Rodriguez (11/2) and Shane Long (6/1). It's 17/2 to end goalless at St Mary's.
