Euro 2016: What do the Home Nations and Ireland need to qualify?

England became the first nation to join hosts France at Euro 2016 last month, and Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland are all still in with a chance of making it too.

Here is our round-up on where the Home Nations and Ireland sit in their respective groups and what they need to qualify for next summer's showpiece...

Group B: Wales
Position: 1st
Played: 8
Points: 18
State of play: One point ahead of Belgium, five clear of Israel
Remaining fixtures: Bosnia and Herzegovina (a), Andorra (h)

Wales' wait to confirm their place in a major tournament for the first time since 1958 goes on after they were held to a goalless draw at home to Israel and Belgium beat Cyprus last time out.

However, Chris Coleman's men need just a point from their final two Group B games: Bosnia and Herzegovina away then Andorra at home.

Even in the unlikely scenario they lost both of those two matches, Israel would still need to beat Cyprus at home and Belgium away to leapfrog Wales into the automatic top two qualifying positions.

Image: Scotland lost 3-2 to Germany in a thrilling encounter

Scotland's hopes of automatic qualification were dashed after the 3-2 defeat at home to Germany last month, leaving them eight points adrift of the world champions and unable to catch both Poland and the Republic of Ireland as the two meet in the last fixture.

Four points from the final two games against Poland and Gibraltar could be enough, though, as they have a superior head-to-head record with the Republic of Ireland, but they need Martin O'Neill's men to lose their remaining fixtures.

However, if Gordon Strachan's side beat Poland and the Irish then do the same on Sunday, the Poles will end up in fourth, with the Republic of Ireland qualifying in second and Scotland taking the play-off spot.

Group D: Republic of Ireland
Position: 3rd
Played: 8
Points: 15
State of play: Four points behind leaders Germany, two off second-placed Poland and four points ahead of Scotland
Remaining fixtures: Germany (h), Poland (a)

Image: Jonathan Walters scored in the win over Georgia

Jonathan Walters' second-half strike gave the Republic of Ireland a crucial 1-0 win over Georgia in September, meaning they stay in touch with Germany and Poland at the top while edging further away from Scotland.

They have a tough finish to the campaign, though, hosting Germany before visiting Poland in what could end up being a straight play-off for the second automatic spot.

O'Neill's men have to be careful, too, because if they lose both of those games and Scotland get a result against Poland before presumably beating Gibraltar, they will miss out on that third play-off spot.

Group E: England

Position: 1st
Played: 8
Points: 24
State of play: Qualified; nine points clear of second-placed Switzerland
Remaining fixtures: Estonia (h), Lithuania (a)

Image: England striker Wayne Rooney (L) reacts as England's Harry Kane celebrates scoring against Switzerland

England became the first country to qualify for Euro 2016 after thrashing minnows San Marino 6-0 with the help of a record-equaling Wayne Rooney penalty.

Roy Hodgson's men secured their automatic qualification spot with three games to spare and will finish top after a 2-0 win over Switzerland in September, where Rooney broke Sir Bobby Charlton's goalscoring record from the spot.

England have never won all their qualification games before but that will be a realistic goal for Hodgson and his squad now next summer's trip to France has been confirmed.

Group F: Northern Ireland
Position: 1st
Played: 8
Points: 17
State of play: One point ahead of Romania, four clear of third-placed Hungary
Remaining fixtures: Hungary (h), Finland (a)

Image: Kyle Lafferty's late equaliser against Hungary keeps them top

Northern Ireland will have to wait a little longer to qualify, but Kyle Lafferty's late equaliser against Hungary keeps them top of Group F.

While they drew with third-placed Hungary, Romania also picked up a point as they were held by Greece, so the situation in Group F remains the same.

Michael O'Neill's side can reach the European Championship for the first time with victory against Greece on Thursday, although any result would be enough if Hungary fail to beat the Faroe Islands.
