Jamie Redknapp says Jurgen Klopp is the perfect fit for Liverpool and can bring success back to Anfield

Sky Sports football expert and former Liverpool star Jamie Redknapp has hailed the club's appointment of Jurgen Klopp.

The Reds announced that Klopp - who led Borussia Dortmund to two Bundesliga titles and a Champions league final in a seven-year spell - was their new man to succeed Brendan Rodgers on Thursday night.

Klopp's to-do list

We look at the main issues facing new Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp.

"I think he's the perfect signing for Liverpool at this time," Redknapp told Sky Sports News HQ. "He's got a real enthusiasm about him and he seems infectious - and that's exactly what Liverpool need.

"When you're playing at Anfield and there's some negativity around, he'll come in and lift everybody and excite them. He plays really high-tempo football. And that is exactly what Liverpool fans want to see."

Carra on Klopp's priorities

Redknapp, who played for Liverpool between 1991 and 2002, thinks that Klopp's first priority at Anfield will be to shore up the club's defence.

"The most important thing he has to do is tighten up their back four and stop them conceding as many goals as they have done in the last three or four years, which has been a recurring theme," he said.

If the German can make the Reds' back line harder to penetrate, though, and keep his main players fit, then Klopp has the personality to achieve a top-four finish or even win a trophy this season, according to Redknapp.

"They have a got a lot of good players there, like Coutinho, Benteke and Sturridge, who he needs to keep fit," said Redknapp. "And they are the main questions that he has to answer - can he get Sturridge fit for any length of time? As if he can, then there is no reason why Liverpool cannot creep into the top four this year as he will get them going, there is no doubt about it.

"He has got that something about him that some managers have got and why can't Liverpool go and win a trophy under him this season? And from a personal point of view, he is going to be box office for us. He gets excited, is animated and we love that passion.

My teams must play at full throttle and take it to the limit every single game.

"At the moment he just wants to stabilise the club and get them going again and playing good football, then who knows? It is very difficult as Liverpool used to dominate in the Seventies and Eighties, then United did, buying the best players.

"And now it is difficult as Man City and Chelsea, who have so much money, are buying the best players and you are trying to compete in a different style and way now.

"He needs to be in charge of all the signings, which I think he will be, and there is no reason why he cannot do a really good job at Liverpool. I think he is the perfect man for them at the moment and they have a good chance - as good as anybody - for a top-four finish this season."
