England supporters were left scratching their heads at the sight of Harry Kane taking corners in Saturday's 1-1 draw with Russia at Euro 2016.

The 6ft 2" striker was Premier League top scorer last season, so why was he on corner duty in Marseille? "I can't understand it," said Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp. "We need Kane in the box. To have our best striker taking corners doesn't make any sense."

Roy Hodgson was defiant in the face of criticism, however, saying: "I don't need to apologise for Kane taking a corner." Jack Wilshere also defended the decision. "I've heard some people say they want him in the box," said the midfielder. "But if we get the delivery right, which he can, we have enough big players in the box who can win the ball."

Adam Lallana added: "He has got unbelievable delivery from corners - I have seen it in training. Whoever takes corners, they are taking corners for a reason." Even Alan Shearer weighed into the debate.

Why is Kane on corners?

Why is Harry Kane taking corners for England? We examine the debate.

Kane took all six of England's corners against Russia, but while Hodgson cited his technique as the reason behind it, it remains a peculiar decision. Kane is a powerful aerial threat and didn't take a single corner during England's qualifying campaign, and he is the only striker fulfilling the role at Euro 2016.

It will be intriguing to see if the Tottenham striker continues on corners in England's meeting with Wales on Thursday. Chris Coleman's first-choice corner-taker, by contrast, is Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey, which allows dangerman Gareth Bale to make his presence felt in the box.

It is a common theme. Twenty-two of the 24 first-choice corner-takers at Euro 2016 are midfielders. Aside from Kane, the only other exception is Croatia's Darijo Srna, who plays at right-back.
