Dale Gorman's second-half goal was enough for Newport to beat Morecambe at Rodney Parade.
The first half of a poor contest ended in stalemate, with both defences cancelling each other out.
Jordan Cranston's shot from distance forced Tom King into a decent early save. The main talking point of the first half came when Shrimps goalkeeper Christoffer Mafoumbi almost scored directly from a goal-kick, with the ball only just tipped over the crossbar by King.
Newport upped the tempo in the early stages of the second half and Mafoumbi was forced into a good save from a Scot Bennett strike.
The hosts finally broke the deadlock when Gorman chipped the ball over the keeper in the 69th minute.
Gorman almost got a second eight minutes later but his shot was punched clear by Mafoumbi.
Morecambe came agonisingly close to grabbing an equaliser deep into stoppage time when Bennett cleared Jordan Slew's shot off the line.
