Phil Thompson feels Chelsea striker Diego Costa has "got his mojo back" in time for Liverpool's visit to Stamford Bridge on Friday Night Football.

The return to form of Costa - who has scored four goals in four domestic games this season - is of concern to Thompson, who can see parallels between the Spain striker and former Liverpool star Luis Suarez.

"Diego Costa seems to have got his mojo back," he told Sky Sports News HQ. "You would love him at your football club. It's like Luis Suarez, everyone hated him but we loved him at Liverpool.

"I think he is fantastic. Yes, he goes over that line quite often but he does bring something special to that side."

However, former Anfield defender Thompson says Chelsea will badly miss the organisational skills and game-reading abilities of John Terry, who will miss Friday's match with a foot injury sustained in the weekend draw at Swansea City.

"It will be a big blow," he added. "The years might be catching up with him but he's always been about reading the game.

"He's never had great pace but he organises at the back and I think he will be a big miss. He plays such a major role in that team in the backline."

Thompson has been very impressed with how Liverpool have shaped up this season, and feels the addition of Sadio Mane has adding an extra dimension to their attacking play.

Phil Thompson believes Sadio Mane has been a key signing for Liverpool

"I think Klopp needed that, someone with great pace behind the front man, and Sane gives you that," Thompson said. "He has electric pace and he has a great football brain too.

"Because he can see things with the pace he's moving at, it means he's had a massive impact on this team."

And he added: "I've been very impressed overall. Yes, the Burnley game did not go according to plan but they played some good football during in it.

"There have been some sensational bits of football in there. Jurgen Klopp has been true to the way he plays and has sent them out with a true attacking intent. He's using just one holding midfield player and the attacking players have all clicked."
