LA Galaxy were knocked out of the MLS Cup after a penalty shoot-out defeat to the Colorado Rapids on Sunday.

Former Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard scored in the penalty shoot-out which decided the match after the tie finished 1-1 on aggregate, but his was the only successful Galaxy spot-kick as the Rapids won it 3-1.

Shkelzen Gashi scored for Colorado in the 36th minute and that's how the game finished 1-0 after extra-time.

Former Tottenham man Giovanni dos Santos missed a penalty for the Galaxy while Ashley Cole and Jeff Larentowicz saw their attempts saved by former Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard.

The loss ends the Galaxy's season, and with Gerrard's contract due to expire in December - and with little suggestion of an extension - the 36-year-old could be set for retirement.

Last month an Instagram message from the former Liverpool favourite sparked speculation that he was calling it a day - although the tribute to Galaxy supporters had been sent to mark their fan appreciation night.

Even so, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp later said Gerrard was "always welcome" at the club after he was linked with a possible coaching role.
