Mike Grella's double earned the New York Red Bulls a 2-0 win over the Seattle Sounders to take them back above neighbours New York City into second place in Major League Soccer's Eastern Conference.

The former Leeds forward pounced for the opener in the 18th minute after Sacha Kljestan hit a post, and killed the game off with a second just before the hour.

The Red Bulls are a point ahead of City and one behind conference leaders the Philadelphia Union, who lost to City on Saturday.

Elsewhere, a strong finish to the first half gave Sporting Kansas City a 2-0 win over FC Dallas.

Benny Feilhaber set up Lawrence Olum's opener with a 43rd-minute free-kick and then converted a penalty in first-half injury time.

Olum had a fortunate let-off at 0-0, though, when his back-pass appeared to clearly cross the goal-line before goalkeeper Tim Melia slid to clear the ball.
