Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is likely to make a host of changes to his side when they take on Southampton in their EFL Cup quarter-final clash on Wednesday evening.

The Gunners returned to winning ways on Sunday with a 3-1 win over Bournemouth at the Emirates, and they sit three points off Premier League leaders Chelsea in fourth.

Southampton meanwhile beat Everton 1-0 for their first win in three games. They have not won a major cup since 1976 while their last major cup final appearance came in 2003, a 1-0 FA Cup final defeat by Wenger's Arsenal.

Arsenal, who are looking to win the EFL Cup for a third time, will be without striker Olivier Giroud because of a slight groin problem.

Team news

Wenger often treats the competition as a way to blood youngsters in the first team so the likes of Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Jeff Reine-Adelaide and Rob Holding will hope to be involved.

Match stats

Arsenal have lost just one of their seven League Cup matches with Southampton (W4 D2), though that defeat did come in their most recent meeting (1-2 in Round 3 in 2014/15).

That victory for Southampton is their only win away at Arsenal in their last 23 trips in all competitions (D6 L16).

The Gunners have progressed from just one of their last five League Cup quarter-finals, last doing so in 2010/11 with a 2-0 win over Wigan.

The Saints, meanwhile, have been eliminated at this stage of the competition on each of their last seven attempts. Not since 1986/87 have they progressed to the semi-final, which was one of only two occasions they have done so (also in 1978/79).

Arsenal's last three home League Cup games against Premier League opposition have ended in defeat, with just one goal scored.

Charlie's prediction

Well this is an awkward one for Arsenal. They were lucky in the league meeting to beat Southampton, who recorded a very good result on Sunday.

I do think the Saints will make changes which will make them weaker, although I'm sure Claude Puel would love a result against his good friend Arsene Wenger.

Southampton manager Claude Puel believes Virgil van Dijk will benefit from the stability offered to him at St Mary's

You look at the players Arsenal can bring in and Aaron Ramsey can come in and Alex Iwobi can come in.

The difference in the quality of players coming in will be decisive for me here and I think Arsenal will be able to end November with a win.

Charlie predicts: Arsenal to win 3-2 (Sky Bet's odds: 22/1) and Giroud to score first (Sky Bet's odds: 7/2)
