Luke Shaw is set to miss Manchester United's trip to Northampton and Anthony Martial is a doubt for the EFL Cup third-round tie, live on Sky Sports 1 HD from 7.30pm on Wednesday.

Left-back Shaw sustained a slight groin tear in Sunday's defeat to Watford, which forward Martial left during the first half following a nasty-looking clash of heads.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan is also a doubt for a match Phil Jones (knee) misses out on, while Jose Mourinho will be tempted to make more changes on Wednesday, as he did in the Europa League at Feyenoord last week.

Northampton boss Rob Page is forced to change his starting line-up for the first time in four matches.

Winger Paul Anderson, who joined the Cobblers on the final day of the summer transfer window, is ineligible against United having featured in the competition for his previous club Bradford.

The Cobblers were beaten for the first time in 32 league matches by Chesterfield on Saturday, but despite a disappointing display at the Proact Stadium Page is unlikely to make many more changes.

The likes of JJ Hooper, John-Joe O'Toole, Alfie Potter, Sam Hoskins and Marc Richards will be hoping they get the nod to come in and play.

Charlie Nicholas' prediction

If Jose Mourinho needs momentum then this game should be perfect for him. You can see there are issues in the team - there are big egos and they are finding it tough to adapt. Mourinho will be telling his players he wants to win this trophy because he knows it will take the pressure off him.

The other teams will make changes and, while we probably won't see Zlatan Ibrahimovic or Wayne Rooney start, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford will, while Paul Pogba should get a chance in Rooney's position.

CHARLIE PREDICTS: Northampton 0-4 Man Utd, Martial to score first (45/1 with Sky Bet)

Opta stats

Northampton have never beaten Manchester United (D1 L3).

These two sides met in the FA Cup in 1970 and 2004 with United winning 8-2 and 3-0, but they have never met in the League Cup.

The last time Northampton were involved in a Round 3 League Cup match they beat Liverpool 4-2 on penalties after a 2-2 draw at Anfield in September 2010.

Manchester United have been eliminated from the League Cup by lower league opposition in each of the last two seasons (MK Dons and Middlesbrough).

Jose Mourinho has won seven of his eight League Cup matches against lower ranked opposition, drawing the other.
