Martin Starting Stats

Chelsea were the first team to ever win at St Mary's in August 2001 and they have achieved both of the last two away victories there, having won in February and on Sunday. Southampton went unbeaten in 12 home matches in all competitions in between.

Chelsea have now won on six of their last eight visits to Southampton in all competitions. It was their fourth consecutive win and fourth consecutive clean sheet. They are currently on a run of 11 unanswered goals in the league.

Branislav Ivanovic came on as a substitute on Sunday and remains the last Chelsea player to score with a header in the Premier League. That was the winner against Southampton in February.

It was only Southampton's third defeat in 16 Premier League games. Chelsea became the first team to stop Southampton scoring at home since last Christmas.

Finally, Chelsea had 11 points after 10 matches last season. After 10 games of this season, they have exactly double that total!

Shots fired

Manchester United had 38 shots against Burnley - is that a Premier League record for shots in one game? (Luke, Chelmsford)

MARTIN SAYS: It was a frustrating afternoon for Jose Mourinho's men, who got everything but the goal against a dogged Burnley.

Opta have been keeping records on shots since the start of the 2003/04 season and in that period, United came close to breaking the record for most shots in a Premier League game. Ultimately, they fell short of Manchester City's monstrous total of 44 efforts at goal during their legendary final day win over Queens Park Rangers in 2012, which won them the Premier League title. United's tally against Burnley is the fifth-highest tally in the last 13 seasons.

Most shots in one PL game

Date Team Total shots
13/05/2012 Man City v QPR 44
21/03/2015 Man City v West Brom 43
17/01/2009 Chelsea v Stoke 42
29/01/2014 Chelsea v West Ham 39
29/10/2016 Man Utd v Burnley 38
20/04/2016 Liverpool v Everton 37
14/04/2006 Man Utd v Sunderland 36

Was United's total shots the most accumulated in a Premier League game without scoring? The answer is no. Chelsea racked up 39 shots during their 0-0 draw with West Ham United in 2014.

And yes, the manager in the dugout that day was also Mourinho!

Goal-shy Zlatan

Zlatan Ibrahimovic had 12 shots against Burnley. Is that a record? (Matt, Canterbury)

MARTIN SAYS: After making a flying start to his Manchester United career, the goals are drying up for Ibrahimovic. He has now gone more than nine hours without a Premier League goal - his worst sequence without a league goal in a decade.

His shot count against Burnley wasn't the highest recorded in one Premier League game, though. Again, Opta have data on shots since 2003/04 and in that period, the record is held by two players: Cristiano Ronaldo, who had 13 shots for Manchester United against Reading in a 3-2 win at Old Trafford in 2006, and Wayne Rooney, who had 13 against Fulham in 2010.

Both Ronaldo and Rooney had braces in those games, which leaves Ibrahimovic with the unwanted tag of being just the second player in the last 13 Premier League seasons to have more than 11 shots in one game without scoring.

Most shots by a player in one PL game

Date Player Match Shots Goals
30/12/2006 Cristino Ronaldo Man Utd v Reading 13 2
14/03/2010 Wayne Rooney Man Utd v Fulham 13 2
12/03/2006 Wayne Rooney Man Utd v Newcastle 12 2
15/03/2008 Cristiano Ronaldo Man Utd v Derby 12 1
29/10/2016 Zlatan Ibrahimovic Man Utd v Burnley 12 0
27/12/2011 Robin Van Persie Arsenal v Wolves 12 0

Like the Swedish superstar, Robin van Persie fired 12 shots for Arsenal as they were held 1-1 by Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Emirates in 2011. Ironically, he has scored a goal at Old Trafford since Ibrahimovic last did!

Ibrahimovic has found the net four times for United this season but his conversion rate is much lower than what the striker will be used to. No Premier League player has had more shots than the 57 attempts Ibrahimovic has had at goal this season. As you can see from the table below, that's 16 more than Philippe Coutinho and 21 more than Sergio Aguero, who has scored three more league goals than Ibrahimovic.

Total shots 2016/17 season

Player Total Shots Goals
Zlatan Ibrahimovic 57 4
Philippe Coutinho 41 4
Sergio Aguero 36 7
Christian Eriksen 33 0
Theo Walcott 32 5
Diego Costa 31 8
Eden Hazard 31 5
Michail Antonio 31 5
Paul Pogba 31 1

Card shirks

Who has played the most Premier League matches ever without getting booked? @fiddyain

MARTIN SAYS: The player to have played the most Premier League minutes without receiving a yellow card is former Liverpool winger John Barnes.

The England international played 201 Premier League matches - a total of 16,407 league minutes - without ever incurring the wrath of the referee. Barnes never received a red card, either, so he's played the most Premier League minutes without picking up either a red or yellow.

As you can see from the table below, no other player has reached 100 Premier League matches without being booked.

Most PL games without a booking

Player Games
John Barnes 201
Mike Sheron 92
Alan Smith 75
Michael Oaks 72
Keith Branagan 68
Nigel Spackman 67
Alan Kelly 66
Robert Earnshaw 65
Bafetimbi Gomis 64

The player to have played the most Premier League minutes without a red card is Ryan Giggs, who wasn't sent off in any of his 21 Premier League seasons that stretched over 45,495 minutes.

Streaky strikers

Romelu Lukaku has scored in his past seven Premier League games against West Ham - is that the longest consecutive scoring streak against one particular Premier League opponent? (Jamie, Weymouth)

MARTIN SAYS: Lukaku's goal was his sixth in eight league games this season for Everton and the striker has become the ultimate bogey man for West Ham.

But it's not the longest streak of scoring against one particular club. Fans of Stoke City will have been delighted to see Van Persie leave these shores for Turkey as he racked up an eight-game run of scoring in consecutive games for Arsenal and Manchester United against the Potters.

Maybe that was the reason behind Mark Hughes reportedly showing an interest in the striker during the summer? It's hard to score against a club you're contracted to!

Consecutive goals against one PL club

Player Opponent Consecutive goals
Robin Van Persie Stoke City 8
Romelu Lukaku West Ham 7
Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink West Ham 7
Alan Shearer Man City 6

Lukaku will be putting April 22 in his diary as that's when Everton travel to London Stadium to play the Hammers. He'll have a chance there to draw level with Van Persie's eight-goal haul.
