Flamengo remember fire victims in emotional game at Maracana

Flamengo played Fluminense at an emotional Maracana on Thursday

Flamengo have played their first game since 10 youth players were killed in a fire at their training ground.

Around 50,000 fans, many with white balloons, banners and flags, attended the Rio state championship semi-finals against rivals Fluminense at the Maracana.

The game was initially scheduled for Saturday, just hours after the tragedy.

There was a lights tribute in the 10th minute to remember the 10 who died. The victims were aged between 14 and 16 years old.

Survivor Cauan Emanuel, who was released from hospital this week, could be seen in tears in the stands, flanked by family members and Flamengo fans.

Police are still investigating what caused the fire.

Flamengo lost 1-0 against Fluminense, who will play Vasco da Gama in the final.
