WATCH: Are Northern Ireland right to be unhappy with Switerland penalty award?

Watch the incident as Switzerland are awarded a controversial penalty in the World Cup play-off first leg against Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland's Corry Evans gave away what proved to be a match-winning penalty for Switzerland in their World Cup play-off first leg in Belfast.

Xherdan Shaqiri's volley from outside the box struck Evans as he turned his back to the ball, and referee Ovidiu Hategan awarded the spot-kick for handball.

Ricardo Rodriguez stepped up and converted, handing Switzerland a 1-0 win in their World Cup play-off first leg. But was it the right decision?

Speaking after the game on Sky Sports, former Northern Ireland international Iain Dowie said: "Ten out of 10 referees would not give that penalty.

"He's in a perfect position. I thought he was picky all night, and he has got the two big decisions in the game badly, badly wrong. How he has given that, in a game of this magnitude, is unfathomable to me."

Evans was also booked, meaning he'll miss Sunday's second leg in Switzerland.
