Michael O'Neill says Chris Brunt will still play an important part at Euro 2016

Northern Ireland's Chris Brunt has been ruled out of Euro 2016 after surgery on a knee injury.

West Brom have confirmed Brunt ruptured a cruciate ligament during the weekend win over Crystal Palace and is expected to miss six months.

And the 31-year-old, a regular during qualifying, will now be denied the chance to play at his country's first major finals appearance since 1986.

Northern Ireland boss Michael O'Neill told Sky Sports News HQ: "It's very sad to see a player miss out on the chance to go to the finals given he's played so long in a Northern Ireland shirt.
