Robert Snodgrass believes England fans will turn on their side if they fail to score the first goal against Scotland on Friday.
The Hull City favourite reckons England supporters have been drained after a succession of disappointments at major tournaments over the years.
Snodgrass insists the passion of Scotland fans could give them an edge when the teams meet at Wembley in Friday's World Cup Qualifier, and the 29-year-old is confident the home fans could turn on their team if Scotland take the lead in the Group F clash.
Snodgrass said: "I speak to English people and I don't think they want England to do well because it's the same old story every time they go to a tournament finals. That's quite sad when you think about it.
"It's a totally different mentality to up here, where everyone is rooting for Scotland and wanting the country to do well."
In the last meeting between the teams at Wembley, substitute Rickie Lambert scored the winning goal for England in a 3-2 victory.
Scotland had twice taken the lead with strikes by James Morrison and Kenny Miller, with the hosts hitting back through Theo Walcott and Danny Welbeck.
Snodgrass is relishing the opportunity to test himself against Scotland's oldest rivals, as the visitors look to close the gap at the top of the table with a win.
"England are the arch-enemies and the whole of Scotland enjoys it when England lose," Snodgrass added.
"England know their fans will turn on them if they don't score first."
