Gordon Strachan remains "perfectly suited" to the Scotland job despite recent results, according to Brendan Rodgers.

Strachan's position has been called into question in the wake of two poor World Cup qualifying results during the international break, a 1-1 home draw with Lithuania and a 3-0 defeat in Slovakia.

Assistant Mark McGhee would not be drawn on reports Strachan is considering his future, and in the meantime the manager has received the backing of Rodgers and Rangers counterpart Mark Warburton.

"Gordon is an excellent manager with big experience," the Celtic boss said. "I don't know him that well but from the meetings and any chance I have had to speak to him up here, I think he is perfectly suited to be the manager of Scotland.

"He has showed in many clubs and this club here that he can get the best out of many players.

"There are maybe deeper rooted issues within Scottish football but like I say I haven't been here long to see what they might be, but obviously of course when you are the manager you are always under the spotlight."

And former Celtic and Scotland defender Stephen McManus has echoed Rodgers' sentiments insisting Strachan is the right man for the job.

"I am not saying this because he is an ex-manager, I am saying it honestly, I believe Gordon Strachan is the right man to take the country forward now," said the 34-year-old Motherwell captain, who was capped 26 times by his country.

"A lot is going to be riding on the next game. You could win at Wembley and end up back in contention. You can't change what has happened, but if the negativity rolls on it doesn't do the players any good, or supporters any good.

"A lot of managers lose their jobs too quickly, I don't think there is a need to do that just now. The results were disappointing but I feel the country is too negative at times like this."

Celtic had four players involved with the Scotland squad in midweek - Leigh Griffiths, Kieran Tierney, James Forrest and Craig Gordon - but Rodgers is confident they will be in the right frame of mind for Saturday's home game against Motherwell despite their disappointment.

"I always say to the players who go away to play with their international team, just worry about your international team, don't worry about Celtic," he said.

"Go away, give your best to the coaches and managers to be the best you can for your country. When you come back to here, only worry about Celtic."
