Scotland assistant Mark McGhee has refused to comment on reports that boss Gordon Strachan is considering his future.

McGhee, who is also Motherwell manager, insists the national side "still have a great chance of qualification" for the 2018 World Cup despite dropping to fourth in Group F following a 3-0 defeat to Slovakia on Tuesday.

Strachan's side have just four points from their opening three games - ahead of next month's trip to Wembley - and Sky Sports understands there is no change to the status quo despite conflicting reports on him continuing in the role.

Speaking ahead of this weekend's trip to Celtic, McGhee would not be drawn on speculation claiming the former Hoops boss would not be in charge against England on November 11.

"I am not going to comment on that," he said. "That is for Gordon, not for me. Gordon has his own thoughts. I have not spoken to him, no.

"My only thought I will give you is that there is still a great chance of qualification, obviously results have to improve but I think there is potential there for that to happen. So I think it is still all to play for."

Meanwhile, Hearts head coach Robbie Neilson has called on Scotland fans to unite behind Strachan and urged supporters to keep the faith ahead of next month's clash with the 'auld enemy'.

"We're still in the group. We've still got a chance," he said. "We've got a huge game coming up so let's try and get behind the team and not be too negative. It's easy to be negative and harder to be positive - but that's what we need to do.

"Ahead of the England game we need to back the team and back the manager and try to get a result. All this negativity isn't helping anyone at all. I hope Gordon will still be in charge at Wembley. I think he's done a good job and we have to be positive with the situation we're in.

Former Scotland striker Charlie Nicholas says manager Gordon Strachan has run out of ideas to take the team forward and criticises his decisions

"We've got a lot of really good young players coming through. It will take time for them to develop. If you look at Slovakia's midfield three [Milan Skriniar, Juraj Kucka, Marek Hamsik] they play for Sampdoria, AC Milan and Napoli. They've got 90-odd caps between them. We can't just expect to go and turn these teams over.

"It will take time for these young players to progress to the level where we're going to qualify consistently.

"It's 20 years since we had most of our players playing at the top clubs in England, but I think we're coming to the end of that. We've got a lot of good young guys getting a lot of game time in the SPFL and down in England."
