Midfielder Jack Wilshere has defended England’s performance against Norway on Wednesday and believes the national team’s critics might "be a bit kinder" with better analysis.
Manager Roy Hodgson and his side have fallen under renewed criticism following a functional if not uninspiring display in a 1-0 win at Wembley.
England travel to Basel on Monday to take on Switzerland in their first Euro 2016 qualifier and Wilshere has stressed this is the start of something new – not a continuation of their disappointing World Cup.
"If people had analysed the World Cup a bit more I think they'd have been a bit kinder," he said.
"There were a few individual errors and lapses in concentration that cost us, and at that level those players will punish you.
"There were more positives than people give us credit for.
"Norway was always going to be difficult game – when teams come to Wembley and sit behind the ball it's always going to be tough.
"But our tempo at the start was good. The first half was really positive, we started the second half a bit slow but got back to where we were and went on to win the game.
"Even if it was a friendly at home and preparation for Monday, we still wanted to win and we did."
New captain Wayne Rooney will lead the side for the second time, while Calum Chambers and Fabian Delph could feature after making their debuts against the Norwegians.
And Wilshere said: "We've got new captain and a new, young team – this is the start of it.
"Switzerland is a massive game that we want to win or get something out of at least, because it's a qualifier and we’re in a tough group.
"We know if we put in performances and get results the fans will come back onside."
