Former England boss Steve McClaren believes Wayne Rooney is deserving of a farewell cap after a "phenomenal" international career.
Rooney is set to earn his final England cap in Thursday's fixture against the USA at Wembley, live on Sky Sports Main Event, with with the proceeds of the fixture going towards The Wayne Rooney Foundation.
Former England defender Stuart Pearce criticised the idea of Rooney's ceremonial return to the England side, saying it "cheapens" the international cap.
McClaren, however, supports the decision to give the DC United striker a fitting farewell.
"He's been fantastic, it's well deserved and he's had a phenomenal career but it probably won't be appreciated until he stops playing," he said.
"He's not just a tremendous player but a tremendous character on and off the field. He's been fantastic for England and has always given 110 per cent and will thoroughly deserve the evening he will receive at Wembley."
Tottenham midfielder Harry Winks is keen to learn from Rooney while away on international duty and admits having England's all-time leading scorer in training is "surreal".
