Tim Sherwood says he is 'enthused by England' after Netherlands victory

Tim Sherwood said he was ‘enthused’ by England after their win against the Netherlands

Tim Sherwood says he is "enthused by England" after their winning performance against the Netherlands, and believes they will surprise people at the World Cup.

Gareth Southgate's side beat their hosts 1-0 in Amsterdam after Jesse Lingard's first international goal, and outplayed Ronald Koeman's team.

It was a victory that impressed former England midfielder Sherwood, and is one that is endearing him back to watching international games.

"I was delighted with them, it made me want to watch international football again. It's vibrant now, there is a lot of pace around that team, a lot of rotation and I think that's what Gareth is trying to install into the boys," he said on The Debate.

"They will get better, obviously, and they have a lot to improve on but it's a great start today, going away to the Netherlands and beating them. It's a great result and it was a really encouraging performance for me.

"I'm enthused by England. I don't think by any means they're going to go to go to the World Cup and win it, but I think they are going to get through the group stage and surprise a few people along the way.

"I think after the World Cup, we're all going to be very encouraged by what we're seeing from a young England team."

Fellow panellist Sue Smith - who has won 93 caps for England Women - was also pleased with the display from the senior men's team, although believes they should work on their final ball.

"I was really impressed. I think the fact Gareth Southgate was trying new things, he was experimenting and I was impressed by how dynamic they were going forward," she said.

"There was movement, lots of willing runners which is important, people want to see good football. Maybe just that final ball was lacking at times, but overall, it was a good performance and good win which is exactly what he and team would have wanted."
