Dele Alli says the pain of England's loss to Iceland at Euro 2016 will spur the squad on at the World Cup this summer.
The Tottenham midfielder was a starting member of the England team who were beaten 2-1 in Nice and exited at the last-16 stage two years ago.
Since that shock loss, England qualified comfortably for Russia 2018 and begin their preparation with a friendly against the Netherlands on Friday.
Alli says the squad are determined to erase the pain of the early exit they suffered when last at a major tournament.
"The Euros was one of the best and worst experiences of my career at the same time," he said.
"Growing up, you watch the big tournaments on TV. You see the flags flying out of the windows and how much it means to the country - to be part of it was massive. But the way it ended in France was a huge disappointment.
"As a team, it would have been easy to hide, not to look back on it and get it out of our memories.
"But it was important we went through it, so that it doesn't happen again. I think as a team, and as individuals, we're stronger from going through that."
Alli continues to thrive at Tottenham and spoke at the launch of the club's Community Football League - aimed at reducing crime and anti-social behaviour in Haringey.
But the 21-year-old has only managed two goals for England in 22 appearances and concedes it can be difficult to replicate club form on the international stage.
"It's different because at Tottenham you are training every day, you are playing, then you go to England and it's different players to what you are used to with your club," he said.
"Everyone wants to play well for their country and maybe I haven't scored as many goals. But I'm still helping the team, still trying to get into the starting XI in every game.
"I definitely think we've gained from it [Euro 2016]. You never know what will happen in a tournament but, as a team we feel stronger, we feel more together, and we are learning from it."
