England supporters have requested just 5,702 tickets for next summer's World Cup in Russia in the first 24 hours of the latest sales period.

The figure represents only 0.4 per cent of applications from around the world.

FIFA have revealed the numbers to Sky Sports News following the opening of a second round of ticket sales this week.

More than 1.3m tickets have been requested since Tuesday and the current phase remains open until January 31.

England are currently ranked 15th for global requests, but the Football Association are understood to be relaxed by the figures and anticipate a strong turnout from fans at their games next year.

Russian supporters account for 66 per cent of ticket requests so far, while Argentina, Peru and Mexico are the next most popular nations to have applied.

England open their World Cup campaign against Tunisia in Group G on June 18 before facing Panama six days later, with Belgium the final group-stage opposition on June 28.

Following the end of last month's opening phase of World Cup ticket sales, England received an allocation of 12,760 - 1.7 per cent of tickets assigned worldwide.

Ticket sales for the World Cup, made through FIFA's website, are divided into multiple phases, followed by last-minute sales.

The latest random selection phase closes on January 31 and reopens on March 13 for a further three weeks.

More than 500,000 tickets were requested on the opening day of World Cup ticket sales in September.

Prices range from £79 for the cheapest seats at group stage matches to £829 for the most expensive seats at the final.

Supporters must apply for FAN ID, a Russian identity card, after receiving their ticket confirmation, which will also guarantee visa-free travel and complimentary use of special trains around Russia during the competition.

In line with previous ticketing policies, Russian residents will have a special price category with tickets starting at £17.
