Rachel Yankey and Kelly Smith believe Mark Sampson's sacking will not halt the progress of England's Lionesses.

England legend Rachel Yankey is convinced the departure of head coach Mark Sampson will not halt the Lionesses' progression.

Sampson was sacked on Wednesday after evidence of "inappropriate and unacceptable" behaviour from his time as Bristol Academy boss came to light.

England were 13th in the FIFA Rankings when Sampson was appointed in December 2013 and are currently fourth after reaching the semi-finals of both the 2015 Women's World Cup and this summer's Euros.

"I don't think it will affect the team at all," Yankey told Sky Sports News at her induction into the National Football Museum Hall of Fame.

"The girls are professional. Any time you put on that England shirt you are playing for your country, you're going out there with pride, so I don't think it will have an effect on the team.

"It's obviously a surprise the allegations that have come out [against Sampson] but I think it's for everyone else, the FA and the investigations team.

"I don't know too much about it and I'm sure we'll find out the full story in time to come."

Yankey's former Arsenal and England team-mate Kelly Smith was also honoured at Thursday night's ceremony in Manchester.

The 38-year-old says the current crop of England players will be focused on the start of the FA Women's Super League season, which kicks off on Friday night with Everton Ladies hosting Liverpool in a Merseyside derby.

She said: "They are going to get their heads down and train as well as they can for their clubs and look forward to the next international. Who will be the manager? I don't know."
