Gareth Southgate has question marks over several strikers as he prepares to name his latest England squad on Thursday.
Southgate is approaching his first games as full-time manager, a friendly in Germany next Wednesday followed by a World Cup Qualifier against Lithuania three days later at Wembley.
But his selection has been complicated by a number of injuries to his regular forwards, none more so than Harry Kane suffering ankle ligament damage.
Tottenham are hopeful Kane's injury is not as bad as a similar one which kept him out for 10 games in the autumn, but the Premier League's joint-top scorer does not yet have a timescale for his recovery.
Captain Wayne Rooney and Daniel Sturridge are both currently sidelined, and the latter has not played since February 4 due to illness and a knee injury.
West Ham's Andy Carroll only recently returned from a month out, while Danny Welbeck has missed Arsenal's past two games through illness and has been used sparingly since his comeback from a long-term knee injury.
Kane is the only Englishman to have scored more Premier League goals this season than Jermain Defoe, but Sunderland's 34-year-old last played for his country in November 2013.
Elsewhere Southgate's most obvious absentees are Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson and Spurs left-back Danny Rose.
