Graeme Le Saux will be part of the selection process to decide the next England manager, Sky sources understand.
Gareth Southgate looks to be in a strong position after leading England to two wins and two draws during his time as interim boss, with the formal process to appoint the next manager beginning on Wednesday, as initially reported in The Times.
But the Football Association will be keen to get the right person for the job after Sam Allardyce's short reign and former Chelsea and England defender Le Saux is set to be consulted on his views, along with Howard Wilkinson.
The pair will not be part of the official selection panel however, which will consist of FA chief executive Martin Glenn, chairman Greg Clarke and technical director Dan Ashworth.
Southgate has a day off after overseeing England's 2-2 friendly draw with Spain on Tuesday night.
The FA will hold their usual debrief of the international window next week, although the topic of the next manager is not specifically due to be discussed.
England do not play again until March 22, when they face Germany in Dortmund in another high-profile friendly, before they take on Lithuania at Wembley in a World Cup Qualifier four days later.
