Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney has withdrawn from the England squad due to a minor knee injury.
The striker sat out Monday morning's session at Tottenham Hotspur's training ground as a precaution.
However, with Gareth Southgate already set to rest his captain for the visit of Spain to Wembley Stadium on Tuesday night, Rooney has been allowed to return to his club for further assessment.
Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson is set to captain England in Rooney's absence.
Left-back Ryan Bertrand, who also missed Monday's session, will remain with the Three Lions squad and stays in contention for the fixture against Julen Lopetegui's side.
Tuesday's game will be the last of Gareth Southgate's four-match audition as England interim manager since replacing Sam Allardyce in September.
The 31-year-old Rooney was dropped by Southgate for last month's World Cup qualifying draw with Slovenia but captained the side for the 3-0 win over Scotland on Friday evening.
Manchester United take on Arsenal in the Premier League on Saturday at Old Trafford, live on Sky Sports 1 HD, with coverage from 11:30am.
Rooney had fallen out of favour with United boss Jose Mourinho in recent weeks, with his poor form resulting in him being dropped, but he did start United's 3-1 victory over Swansea in their last Premier League game on November 6.
