Jordan Henderson says clips of Paul Gascoigne's Euro '96 goal against Scotland prove Friday's World Cup Qualifier is not a normal game for England.
England interim manager Gareth Southgate confirmed Henderson - who captained the national team in their 0-0 draw with Slovenia - will be in the starting line-up to face Scotland at Wembley, despite Wayne Rooney also being named in the side.
And Liverpool midfielder Henderson has revealed how the players have been preparing for what he says is a special fixture for England, admitting he has taken particular motivation from Gascoigne.
"Obviously it is a massive game. If you look at the history of the fixture, it's not a normal game," said Henderson.
"We watched a video of a lot of the past games - there was a few I can remember, especially Paul Gascoigne's goal at Euro '96.
"The lads know the importance of the game, not only because it's England v Scotland but also because we want to qualify for the World Cup."
Henderson is also drawing inspiration from one of his current England team-mates.
"Wayne Rooney uses his experience very well, especially for the younger lads," said Henderson. "He's a big part in trying to get the victory."
Henderson has backed Southgate to take the England job on a permanent basis, and said the players are relieved they will get to remember Armistice Day by wearing a poppy.
"I think the manager has done brilliantly since he was given the opportunity, and the players are very supportive of him," he said.
"On the training pitch we've learnt a lot and we're trying to put into practice in the game at the weekend. Hopefully the performance is at a high level and we get the three points."
Henderson added: "I think the poppy is very important for the country and the players to remember what those people did for this country, the sacrifice."
