Gary Cahill backs Steve Holland to succeed with England

Gary Cahill thinks Chelsea assistant Steve Holland will have a positive impact on the England squad after joining the coaching team.

Gary Cahill has backed Chelsea coach Steve Holland to be a hit with the England squad this week.

Holland has stepped up to senior level after working with new interim boss Gareth Southgate at Under-21 level and is helping the squad prepare for World Cup Qualifiers against Malta and Slovenia.

Cahill joined Chelsea six months after Holland was promoted to the role of first-team coach at Stamford Bridge in 2011, and he said: "I've worked with Steve for many years and know him very well.

"I've trained with Steve in his sessions plenty of times and I'm sure the lads are going to enjoy the sessions coming up this week.

"I've no doubt Steve and Gareth are going to do a fantastic job."

Cahill was picked at centre-half for Sam Allardyce's only game in charge in Slovakia last month and, according to the defender, England's players have already moved on from the abrupt end to the Allardyce era.

"My personal dealings with him were great, but we have to move on and prepare for these games in the best possible frame of mind.

"I've played under many managers and you learn to move on and get cracking straight away under a new manager.

"I am looking forward to taking on a new manager's ideas and moving forward, because ultimately we are here for the same thing. Everyone wants to succeed and win these next two games after what has been a tough week."
