Kevin Campbell believes Arsene Wenger won't leave Arsenal for England, and backs Sam Allardyce to be given the job

Former Arsenal striker Kevin Campbell does not expect Arsene Wenger to take the England manager's job even if he is offered it.

Gunners boss Wenger has been mentioned as a candidate as the FA looks to replace Roy Hodgson who stepped down following England's exit from Euro 2016 at the hands of Iceland.

However, Campbell, who played for Arsenal from 1988 to 1995 before Wenger took charge, thinks the Frenchman, who has one year remaining on his contract, has too much on his plate at the Emirates after missing out on the Premier League title to Leicester last season.

"No, I don't think he will (take the job)," Campbell told Sky Sports News HQ. "I think he's got a big enough job to do at Arsenal, especially after what happened at the back end of last season.

"There was quite a bit of unrest at the club from the supporters. It was a fantastic opportunity lost, I believe. Fair play to Leicester, Leicester won it hands down, but it was the best chance Arsenal had had in many years to bring the Premier League title to the Emirates and it went missing.

"So he is going to have his work cut out this season. He is going to have to make it happen this season."

Former Tottenham striker Jurgen Klinsmann is the bookmakers' favourite for the England job after his compatriot Olivier Bierhoff suggested he was in discussions with the FA, but Campbell believes Sunderland boss Sam Allardyce is the right man to manage England.

"I'm not surprised by (Klinsmann being favourite) because it is a very prestigious job," said Campbell.

"But Sam Allardyce has been a fantastic stalwart in this country. He's got different ideas, he knows the players and knows how to win, but he never gets a chance.

"Sam's done a fantastic job at Sunderland, so why not look at somebody like Sam Allardyce? For me, he has got the hard yards behind him and I think he would do a good job."
