Roy Hodgson happy with England performance after Portugal victory

Roy Hodgson is satisfied with England's 1-0 win over Portugal, who were reduced to 10 men in the first half at Wembley

Roy Hodgson said he was pleased with how his side performed after England beat Portugal in their final Euro 2016 warm-up game.

In a drab affair at Wembley, it was a header from Chris Smalling in the 86th minute that sealed the win as Portugal played just under an hour of the game with 10 men after Bruno Alves' red card.

But despite a lacklustre showing, England have won all three of their warm-up matches ahead of the tournament in France, and Hodgson was ultimately pleased with the performances.

"They were three very different games. I was disappointed tonight that it didn't remain 11 v 11, we'd have preferred that," the England boss said.

"I was pleased with the composure. I was pleased with the fact that from the start, we played out consistently from the back which was better than what maybe happened in the previous two games.

"I'm very pleased with the fact the players showed more patience. There was more composure in our play, the pressurising wasn't as frantic as it sometimes has been. Now we need to try and bring those two things together and keep the good part of that frantic pressuring while marrying it to some composed defending and some pressurising.

"There are a lot of positives in terms of some individual performances and it's always positive to go to a tournament when you've won three games on the spin, especially given our opponents' quality."

England now head to France to begin their final preparations ahead of their opening Euro 2016 game against Russia on June 11, and Hodgson believes his side are heading in the right direction but still have room for improvement.

"I'd like to think momentum is important. You never suffer from winning matches, you suffer from defeats, but it's good in the sense that each one of the matches has posed us problems and shown up some areas we still have to work on so even that's positive.

"I think that the two-and-a-half weeks we've been together have been a very intensive time, but the players have been excellent. The way they've buckled down, working hard and trying to improve the shape of our team, the movement, our shape in defence.

"I'm happy that we're definitely on the right track as far as that's concerned, and we'll go to France confident that we can keep this going and also knowing full well that we're not the finished article."
