England player ratings: Peter Taylor gives his verdict on Portugal match

Image: England celebrate Chris Smalling's goal against Portugal

England completed their preparations for Euro 2016 with a laboured 1-0 victory over 10-man Portugal at Wembley on Thursday.

Chris Smalling scored a late goal for the hosts after Bruno Alves was sent off in the first half for a high tackle on Harry Kane.

But who looked good and did any of the subs stake their claim for a starting role in France? We asked former England caretaker manager Peter Taylor to rate each player out of 10...

Joe Hart - 7

Portugal didn't have a shot on target so he didn't have a great deal to do.

Kyle Walker - 8

He got forward well down the right flank while also doing his job defensively. It was a disciplined performance from the Tottenham player.

Gary Cahill - 7

Did alright considering the limited threat from Portugal. If Cristiano Ronaldo had been playing he would have asked more questions.

Chris Smalling - 7

Looked good in partnership with Cahill but this wasn't the hardest test against 10 men for more than half of the match.

Danny Rose - 7

I think he has got better and better and will start at the Euros. Walker was the better of the two full-backs though.

James Milner - 6

I am a massive Milner fan but we might need something different like Jack Wilshere. It's a question of whether Milner can open up a team up.

Eric Dier - 7

You don't really notice him but he didn't give the ball away and he protected the back four, so did his job.

Dele Alli - 7

He still has this little part of him that wants to have a row with somebody, so he needs to calm down. Ricardo Carvalho was winding him up and players will be looking at that.

Harry Kane - 6

It wasn't his best game but it wasn't easy because of the way Portugal played, especially after they had the man sent off. There was no space and there were lots of bodies in front of him.

Wayne Rooney - 7

He played in two positions, starting off behind the front two and then playing as a striker, and did alright. When he went up front he showed better movement.

Jamie Vardy - 6

Didn't have a great night. It was about energy and not really much on the ball.

Substitutes

Raheem Sterling - 7

Made the goal, got the ball in wide areas and delivered. If you talk about Sterling you say he has to score more and get more assists, and he managed to do that tonight.

Daniel Sturridge - 7

Good movement. Still goes too deep at times rather than getting in the box but made one clever run when he unfortunately couldn't keep control in a decent position.

Adam Lallana - 7

Clever, different and as soon as the subs came on we got more free-kicks, asked more questions and made the opposition more nervous.

Jack Wilshere - 7

It's a shame he is not 90-minute fit. Roy might take a chance with him though because he is a very different and clever player.
